Job Description

Participate in the planning and scheduling of construction projects.
Assist Project Manager in establishing performance and delivery criteria’s, ensuring that client and company requirements are being met; prepare project schedules, and plan material purchases.
Participate in shop planning, work scheduling and loading, materials and equipment acquisition and related activities to promote productivity and the delivery of finished products within contracted timeframes.
Monitor and coordinate work performed in fabrication shop.
Supervise/coordinate 2 to 5 personnel in restructuring the setup of the fabrication plant as required to suit projects’ requirements.
Oversee the dismantling, moving, re-installation of shop tools and equipment.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties with assistance to the project.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Technical training related to Civil/Mechanical Engineering, steel detailing, or several years of experience in the construction industry or steel fabrication.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

2-3 years of experience as an engineering technologist, Mechanical Engineer, Civil Engineer or many years’ experience in construction industry or steel fabrication.
Knowledge of structural design and planning principles and procedures.
Knowledge with CNC/machining equipment an asset.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, subcontractors and shop supervisors.
Ability to read schematics and blueprints and/or technical manuals.
Technical knowledge of structural steel and fabrication.
Skill in the use of computers, specifically Windows based applications, CAD knowledge would be an asset.
Ability to provide technical guidance and/or supervision to Welders, Iron Workers, and Labourers
Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
Knowledge of procurement rules and regulations.
Ability to assess contract compliance and product/service quality.
Ability to foster a cooperative business environment.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Skills in workflow analysis and management.
Ability to perform site inspections and/or approve installations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This role involves a combination of office, shop and field work with extended amounts of time using a computer (either laptop or desktop)
This is a planning and scheduling role and requires attention to detail and the ability to monitor and follow up.
The role may require instant decision making ability.
When working in the shop or in the field, this person must wear all appropriate PPE and be dressed appropriately for the conditions at the worksite. (Cold temperatures, rain, dirt etc.)

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Require formal training in Workplace Safety and Health. Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or Certified Construction Safety Officer. Familiar with all 14 elements of the COR Certification Program. Registered Auditor with Construction Safety Association of Manitoba.

Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspect materials received and manage Material Test Reports (MTR)
  • Ensure job numbers and codes are assigned correctly; ensure piece marks are correct and applied correctly.
  • Inspect surface preparation and completed welds; ensure correct weld procedures are available and in use.
  • Maintain control of drawing revisions, weld procedures, and welder qualification.
  • Complete all associated documentation; Quality Control reports, sign-off on drawings, etc.
  • Inspect layout, dimensions, and materials for conformance to the approved shop drawings and job specifications; record and document all results.
  • Coordinate non-destructive testing with appropriate contractors.
  • Write non-conformance reports when necessary.
  • Coordinate with production personnel.
  • QC Inspector may be required to work some shift work.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Dimensional inspection; receiving inspection, weld visual inspection, liquid penetrant inspection, pressure test inspection and paint coating inspection.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Graduate secondary school in welding technology, QA/QC or a related discipline at the University or College level or a minimum of 2 year work experience in QA/QC role.
  • Experience in steel fabrication and welding, technical training related to welding and weld inspection, civil or mechanical engineering technology with emphasis in quality assurance or several years of experience in quality assurance related to steel fabrication and welding would be an asset.
  • W178 Level I Visual Weld Inspection or II Visual Weld Inspection would be an asset
  • Experience with structural codes – CSA W59 and structural welding-CWB would be an asset.
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints and/or technical manuals.
  • Thorough understanding of dimensional specifications and ability to take and record dimensional checks and determine pass/fail criteria.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office applications, CAD knowledge.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Professional verbal and written communications with the ability to work in diverse teams.
  • Must be able to meet tight deadlines and prioritize workload appropriately.
  • Thorough understanding of all safety rules and regulations due to shop inspections, training, and risk to hazards.

Working Conditions:

Requires effective communication and interaction between trades-people, supervisors, managers, and other inspectors.  A “hands on” mentality is required.  Must meet tight deadlines and therefore must be able to prioritize workload appropriately.  Due to shop inspections, training and other shop exposure, the position of Quality Control Inspector is at increased risk to hazards.  It is vital that the QC Inspector understands and obeys all safety rules and regulations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
