Job Description

The Opportunity:

Canadian Natural has an exciting opportunity for a highly detail oriented and organized environmental professional to manage the Environmental Management System (EMS) at its mining assets. You will showcase your strong communication, organizational, and planning abilities by coordinating/conducting all aspects of the Mining EMS including ongoing assurance activities like inspections and audits, environmental performance reporting – both internal and external, and maintaining requirements of a sound EMS program. In addition, you will support regulatory reporting requirements, continuous improvement of environmental performance, and collaborating with contractors and team members to meet environmental commitments.

Key Accountabilities:

Custodian of Canadian Natural Mining Environmental Management System
Provide leadership to environmental staff on the EMS and sound advice to management on the requirements of internationally recognized EMS programs and associated assurance activities
Manage costs associated with all aspects of the EMS, Audits, and reporting
Maintain and improve the Canadian Natural Mining EMS by participation in audits, reviews and risk assessments
Communicate EMS to management, employees, and contractors
Report on specific environmental performance metrics such as number of environmental incidents, spills, releases, or loss of containment
Serve as Canadian Natural Coordinator for Mining Association of Canada’s “Towards Sustainable Mining” Initiative requirements and audits

Skills & Qualifications:

B.Sc. or Technical Diploma. Preferred Discipline/Major:
Environmental Management; Resource Management
Sustainability; Impact Assessment; Conservation Management
Biologic or Earth Sciences
Responsible for a wide variety of diverse and technical issues that require a high degree of detail and accuracy
Takes initiative, is highly detail oriented, and has strong follow-up skills
Professional designation acquired or in progress
Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
Able to work in an office and remote field setting independently
Previous environmental or Oil Sands experience considered an asset
Minimum 3 years of environmental experience in mining/oil and gas environment

Job Description

The Opportunity:

Canadian Natural  has an exciting opportunity for a Stakeholder Relations Advisor based at Horizon site.  Reporting to the Lead, Surface Land and Stakeholder Relations you will work closely with our regulatory team to help ensure stakeholder and communications deliverables are carried out successfully, in support of regulatory applications for oil sands.  The successful candidate will have sound judgment in dealing with sensitive and/or confidential information. Strengths in organization, scheduling, meeting timelines, tracking costs and managing multiple projects are key requirements for this position. You will manage consultants for the completion of Traditional Land Use studies and independent review of project applications and Environmental Impact Assessments.  The successful candidate will require strong communication skills as this role will be responsible for preparing timely responses to stakeholder enquiries related to regulatory applications. Skillful coordination of workshops, site tours, open houses and various other stakeholder consultation activities to build effective relationships with Surface Land Stakeholders and Relation Advisors including Indigenous communities, near Canadian Natural Developments.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and execute an effective stakeholder consultation plan that reflects current regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations and corporate objectives
  • Prepare the public consultation components required to support regulatory process for new and modified oil sands projects
  • Fulfill provincial and federal Indigenous consultation requirements;
  • Prepare reports and documentation to regulatory agencies to track stakeholder consultation requirements. Use database software to track progress with respect to stakeholder commitments
  • Prepare timely responses to stakeholder enquires related to regulatory applications;
  • Participate on a shared On-Call duty roster as required

Other Details:

  • Job location: Must reside in Ft. McMurray, AB
  • Eligible for relocation to Ft. McMurray
  • Shift schedule: 4 10-hour days on, 3 days off (Mon – Thurs)

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field (communications, stakeholder consultation)
  • Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in Stakeholder Relations, working closely with Aboriginal Communities, preferably in the Oil & Gas industry
  • Strong understanding of related regulatory and environmental matters
  • Exceptional knowledge of stakeholder engagement processes along with demonstrated performance of working effectively with local communities is essential
  • Excellent communications skills (research, writing, listening, two-way dialogue and relationship skills) are required
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is essential
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage tight deadlines, learn quickly and work independently
