  • Job Description

The Design Engineer is responsible for the development and engineering of new product solutions outlined in the product brief (PDO) and based on industrial design concepts. The Design Engineer is responsible for ensuring that products meet the design intent, are manufacturing friendly, meet cost targets and meet industry testing and safety standards. The candidate will work on multi-disciplinary project teams in a concurrent environment with members of other functional groups and departments.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To develop creative and sound engineering solutions to new products (as outlined by the product directional outline (PDO), incorporating technical advances in manufacturing processes and materials.
  • To evolve the design concept through a systematic process of modeling, prototyping, testing and analysis refining the design to optimize the function, appearance, and manufacturing of new parts and assemblies. Develop accurate and detailed parts and assembly layouts.
  • To cooperate closely with the Product Marketing and Industrial Design Departments to ensure that developed new products address market needs and customer expectations and work together with cross-disciplinary Project Teams to collectively solve product issues including function, manufacturability, technical application /compatibility, testing and installation, etc.
  • To prepare complete and accurate technical documentation for developed product (assembly and part drawings, part specification sheets) and other supporting documentation of all technical aspects of the product using a common database and complying with Teknion ISO procedures and internal standards.
  • Together with the Engineering team and Test Engineer, interpret the testing requirements as they apply to the new products and their application (BIFMA, CGSB, UL CSA, UBC, IBC, etc.). To ensure that the product design complies with all relevant testing requirements as outlined by the Test Engineer.
  • To coordinate and assist Model and Prototype Shops with fabrication of prototypes and pre-production product as required for the design evolution, testing, showroom and training requirements.
  • To provide preliminary product cost estimates during development.
  • To liaise with 3rd party suppliers to source components or fabrication solutions to produce standard and special designed product.
  • To cooperate with New Product Manufacturing in providing documentation, data and other information required for effective launch of products into full production.
  • To contribute to the development of new processes and tools that improve the concurrent development process and support Teknion’s lead position in the industry.
  • To continue to acquire knowledge of industry trends and standards, manufacturing and materials, technology, competitive product and engineering practices, environmental issues and sustainable design principles.
  • To work together with cross-disciplinary Project Teams to collectively solve product issues including aesthetics, function, manufacturability, technical application /compatibility, testing and installation, etc.
  • To continue to acquire knowledge of industry trends and standards, manufacturing and materials, technology, competitive product and engineering practices, environmental issues and sustainable design principles.
  • To continue to follow up with necessary Engineering change to make sure product launch is supported with clean documentation and necessary improvements.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Mechanical Engineering degree or diploma or equivalent experience
  • 5-8 years engineering experience in product design and manufacturing environment ( in consumer goods preferred )
  • Knowledge and experience with variety of manufacturing processes and materials (ie sheet metal, plastic, glass, wood)
  • Good project and time management skills, experience in handling multiple projects
  • Strong 3D modeling and detail design using Solidworks and Autocad
  • Hands-on experience with prototype and model making
  • Very good communication (verbal and written), presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both in diverse multidisciplinary team environment as well as individually with minimum supervision.

The Territory Sales Representative is accountable for promoting and selling Teknion’s products in the NCR Eastern Ontario Market, and developing and maintaining relationships with new and existing clients in a professional and knowledgeable manner.  This position is responsible for growing territory sales and market share, strategically increasing visibility to both influencers and end users, as well as managing the development of dealer capabilities by partnering with and overseeing dealer execution. The Territory Sales Rep will join a team of interdependent sales professionals in which strategic team selling and a high degree of communication is required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • All sales activities as it relates to achievement of Territory sales and profitability objectives, sales forecasting, and business development.
  • Preparation of annual business plans for the respective territory, participating in the determination of territory market potential and in the preparation of territory sales expense estimates.
  • Identifying business opportunities, developing business relationships with customer base, including corporations, municipal and provincial government agencies and closing business opportunities, as well as promoting products to new and existing customers.
  • Determining, securing, and maintaining new network contacts through appropriate associations, and increasing Teknion’s visibility and presence in the Office Furniture industry.
  • Maintaining and enhancing business relationships with existing Dealers. Discussing and implementing ways to improve performance, as well as educating Dealer personnel (Sales people and support staff) on Teknion products and procedures.
  • Working collaboratively with Dealer Sales personnel to increase Teknion sales through new business development, maintenance of existing accounts, and product education vis-à-vis presentations.Developing close relationships with Dealer management ensuring a strong Dealer commitment.
  • Understanding, implementing and supporting Teknion’s corporate programs, (including incentive, inter-market, and new products) policies and procedures.
  • Building business relationships with the Influencer Communities, including Project Management and Commercial Real Estate.
  • Keeping abreast of industry competitors, market trends, product innovations and market conditions.
  • Providing Teknion Management with critical sales information and maintaining timely and accurate administrative reports.
  • Ensuring access to the best possible channels of distribution by continually searching for better methods to market Teknion products to end users.
  • Conferring with immediate supervisor, suggesting changes and improvements in design, pricing, or policy.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • College diploma or University degree in business or in a related field with specialization in sales or marketing
  • Several years of experience as a sales or marketing representative or in a related occupation
  • Well developed communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Excellent selling skills
  • Good negotiation skills
  • Well developed organizational and decision-making skills
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
  • Well developed human relations skills
  • Good team building skills
