Job Description

The Vancouver QC Lab Technician is responsible for managing the yeast and microbiology program, as well as routine sampling and analyses of raw brewing and packaging materials, environmental samples, process and finished beer. These will include quantitative and qualitative analyses, tests, and measurements to ensure that our beers meet the in-process and finished beer specifications of Big Rock Brewery. The Vancouver Lab Tech is also responsible for adherence and monitoring the quality and food safety programs and supporting the production staff in cellar and packaging operations This position reports to the BC Brewing Lead while working collaboratively with, and taking direction from the Calgary Quality team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain the BC’s yeast management program
  • Continually monitor the quality and purity of brewer’s yeasts during preparation and in process, and make suggestions to the pitching schedules
  • Analyse all microbiological samples via direct microscopy, gram and catalyse testing, total counts, and staining techniques
  • Complete cell count testing using a haemocytometer
  • Issue corrective actions, as required
  • Report all biological result on the shared drive for review and trending
  • Oversee and participate in microbiological surveys
  • Proper preparation of media and broths used to collect and analyze bacteriological samples
  • Sterile sample collecting, including the safe use of propane torches and high proof alcohol for sanitizing equipment surface areas prior to taking sample; typically for beer, ambient air and water analysis
  • Safe and effective use of high-pressure steam autoclaves
  • Properly use and maintain lab glassware and microscopes
  • Assist in the implementation and development of quality programs designed to safeguard the consistency of various quality specifications
  • Provide Brewing and Packaging Departments with accurate and timely analyses and reporting of all products as required
  • Assist the QA and Food Safety Manager with the coordination of Food Safety prerequisite programs
  • Assist in the creation, implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices and Food Safety Programs
  • Assist in the maintenance of all written programs, documentation and associated records
  • Assist in the coordination and the implementation of CFIA rules and regulations
  • The ability to use, calibrate and trouble-shoot the following equipment: uv-spectrophotometers, pH meters, dissolved oxygen meters, high pressure CO2 tanks. density and alcohol analyzers, C – TPO (Total Package Oxygen) analyzers, high pressure steam autoclaves, distillation apparatus, gravity (scale) devices, digital and mercury thermometers, incubators, water baths and conductivity meters
  • Safe dilution, use and disposal of a wide array of chemicals
  • Read, understand and effectively use the SDS documents
  • Use fume hood to ensure chemical reactions are safely controlled and contained
  • Effective use of personal protective equipment while handling chemicals and performing potentially volatile tests
  • Assist with/perform inspections for product quality, product safety and employee health and safety recommending corrective actions and/or preventative measures
  • Interact with the Complaints Program team to answer their technical questions and help handle the complaint investigations
  • Perform daily computer tasks as needed such as building and maintaining statistical spreadsheets, emailing, and/or reporting results to supervisors and other departments
  • Liaise with other production staff i.e. Brewers, Packaging Supervisor, Operators
  • Cellar support: Vessel CIP and sanitation. Filter preparation and use. Carbonation
  • Packaging support: As required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 3- 5 years of QC/QA and Food Safety experience
  • Microbiology /Food Sciences Degree/Diploma an asset but not required
  • Expertise in food science; bio or microbiology; chemistry
  • Great knowledge and skills for lab operations

  • Manual dexterity required to use laboratory equipment, desktop computer and peripherals

  • Willingness to assist production during busy times, where required
  • Ability to work various shifts
  • Overtime may be required
