Job Description

Position Summary

  The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in Mental Health at the JCC will utilize their nursing knowledge and skill to provide optimal care for patients and families living with cancer and experiencing psychosocial distress and underlying mental health concerns.   The RPN functions as a member of the inter-professional Psychosocial Oncology Mental Health team. Working within their scope of practice and in alignment with the College of Nurses of Ontario three factor framework, the responsibilities of the Mental Health RPN include:
• Provide care to patients with mental health  needs that are well defined and established, who have predictable outcomes and manageable responses
• Prepare the patient electronic chart (EPIC), coordination of patient appointments and scheduling
• Best medication reconciliation on new consults and follow up appointments and documentation in the electronic chart (EPIC)
• Case-management, care coordination and ongoing mental health care and support to patients and their families
• The provision of support and assistance to patients and clinicians during clinic visits
• Managing a workload effectively in a fast-paced clinic environment
• Documentation in the JHCC health information system (EPIC) as per CNO standards and management of in basket messages for the PSO team
 

Schedule Work Hours 7.5 hours per day, 4 days per week, Monday to Friday, days (with the possibility of some evenings).

 

Qualifications

 1. Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
2. Current certificates or current community college studies in asepsis, physical assessment, medication administration, and transcribing physician orders
3. Current CPR Certificate
4. Minimum 2 years nursing experience (within the last 2 years) in a Psychiatry care setting
5. Experience working with an oncology patient population is preferred
6. Knowledge of Psychiatric Diagnoses, their associated symptoms, presentation and Psychiatric Medications.
7. Knowledge of Mental Health Act, ability to take the knowledge of various illness and corresponding mental health nursing interventions to guide practice.
8. Basic level knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and/or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is an asset.
9. Good Crisis intervention skills.
10. A desire to work with, and advocate for, individual with severe mental health illnesses.
11. Demonstrated ability to function within an Inter-professional team including nursing collaboration with RN and other members of the health care team
12. Demonstrated ability to function in environments that are fast-paced and that care for patients with changing health care needs
13. Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients, families, and other members of the health care team
14.
