Opportunities and challenges

As the largest and one of the leading law schools in Canada, the Faculty of Law (Common Law Section) will welcome its next Dean as a dynamic and transformation leader who will work collaboratively within the Faculty and the University to achieve the ambitious goals of the Common Law Section’s strategic plan, Excellence, Leadership and Community: Strategic Plan 2019-2024, in alignment with the University’s plan, Transformation 2030, to enhance its reputation as a world-class destination for legal education and research. As the only law school to offer a Common Law degree in both English and French, its bilingual character is a foundational feature of the Common Law Section. With the Calls to Action arising from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Faculty is compelled to lead in the area of tri-juridical legal research and teaching. As restrictions are lifted, the COVID-19 pandemic presents a singular opportunity for the new Dean to lead the Faculty to innovate and enhance in the areas of academic programming, student experience and research.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic Affairs, the Dean is an integral member of the University’s senior leadership team. The Dean has oversight responsibility for all aspects of the internal administration of the Faculty and represents the Faculty both nationally and internationally. The Dean provides inspirational leadership to enhance the Faculty’s regional, national and international standing and works with the Faculty’s leadership team to set the strategic vision and priorities for the next phase of its development. As the head and ambassador of the Faculty, the Dean also represents and promotes it to outside stakeholders including the legal profession, alumni and supporters, and is expected to take an active role in raising funds in support of the Faculty’s activities and projects.

The Dean will have an impressive record of scholarly accomplishments combined with significant experience in administration and demonstrated effectiveness as a leader. The Dean will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and have experience with interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary academic programs and research. Job Description

Here’s what you will do as part of the team:

  • Maintain current property values, review and respond to formal challenges such as Request for Reconsiderations and Appeals to properties in an assigned portfolio;
  • Inspect, collect, research and analyze data relevant to the valuation process;
  • Apply appropriate valuation approach(es) as required by property classification;
  • Communicate and provide appropriate customer service to MPAC employees, taxpayers and municipalities;
  • Appear before tribunals and courts as an expert witness to explain the methodology and process for determining the assessed value;
  • Identify economic factors that may influence the assessed values of complex properties throughout Ontario;
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal and external business stakeholders to proactively communicate valuations and standards; and
  • Be involved in the following properties types in Eastern Ontario:
    • Hotels, Long Term Care Homes, Retirement Homes, Golf Courses

 

Here’s what you will need to succeed:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field such as Real Property Administration, Real Estate and Housing , Geography, Urban Planning or related field;
  • Professional designation, or working towards (completion by January 1, 2023) from one of the following accrediting organizations: IMA, AIC, IAAO or RICS;
  • At least 5 years of experience in the valuation discipline;
  • Expert knowledge of appraisal techniques and theory;
  • Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills to undertake investigation of valuation issues; and
  • Exhibit strong communication skills to liaise with and convey valuation concepts and theories to internal and external stakeholders.

 

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of the economic, environmental and political forces on industrial sectors that impact the value of real property;
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of valuation tools including cost manuals, multiple regression analysis; and
  • Knowledge of assessment related legislation and regulations, including the Assessment Act and the Municipal Act.
