Investment Associate, Private Capital – Sustainability & Energy Transition

The opportunity

As part of our commitment to Net Zero 2050, we are growing! We are actively seeking an Associate to join our Private Capital (“PC”) team based in Toronto. You will be an integral part of the team focused on direct investments in North America evaluating potential investment opportunities, executing transactions, and handling existing portfolio investments that make up our Sustainability and Energy Transition (SET) strategy.

Who you’ll work with

In your new role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a number of professionals including other members of OTPP in Toronto, London, Hong Kong & Singapore and outside professionals such as management teams of our assets, fund partners, investment bankers, board directors and advisors. The role is focused on supporting a core strategic area of the fund – climate-smart investments – where you will also collaborate and partner with other asset classes and internal teams, such as Total Fund Management and Global Strategic Relationships.

The SET team targets investments supporting and capitalizing on sustainability, decarbonization and the energy transition. Sub-sectors of focus include: sustainable fuels, commercial & industrial decarbonization solutions; waste-to-value and the circular economy; and enablement services. Transactions will take the form of growth equity and buyouts seeking lead, co-lead and significant minority investment positions.

What you’ll do

Your time will be spent evaluating new investments and determining whether the company represents an attractive investment opportunity. Among other things, the analysis of investments includes conducting industry and company research, managing third-party advisors, building sophisticated financial models, arranging debt financing, reviewing legal documents, reviewing and analyzing due diligence materials, and preparing internal support materials and written recommendations to PC’s Investment Committee.

Once a transaction has been completed, you will remain involved with the business, potentially attending board meetings as an observer, and will work with the management team and the board of directors to implement value-enhancing initiatives. In addition, you will work directly with management on various initiatives as required, including with respect to mergers and acquisitions, debt refinancings, budgeting and other strategic projects.

You get to play an active role in assisting in and identifying target investment sectors and generating proprietary deal flow in specific sectors. Activities will include conducting desk research, working with bankers and consultants, and attending conferences. There is also the expectation that you assist in building and maintaining relationships with fund partners.

What you’ll need

An undergraduate or graduate degree from a university with a focus on business / finance / accounting / investment analysis

CFA and / or other meaningful designations

Min. 2 years related work experience – ideally in private equity, investment banking, or consulting

Solid financial modelling and valuation skills

Very strong analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth, creative, critical analysis

Deep understanding of fundamental investment analysis

Experience in the investment process, including conducting due diligence, arranging debt financing and negotiating documentation

Ability to develop a good knowledge of the economic/business characteristics, conditions and trends of the target sector; a background in power and energy is an asset

Good communication skills, both oral and written, with solid presentation skills

Great teammate with strong interpersonal skills, able to establish and build relationships

Self-motivated, and possess unquestioned personal and professional integrity

Ability to meet tight timelines and operate in a highly complex and demanding work environment

Ability and willingness to travel

Diversified Industrials & Business Services – Targets investments in industrial and business services companies with strong end-market fundamentals, ideally with both organic and acquisition growth opportunities. Diversified Industrials has a particular focus on packaging, capital goods, automation, and building products. Business Services has a particular focus on route-based services, environmental services, facility services and other B2B services.

Financial Institutions Group – The Financial Services Team invests across the financial services sector with a focus on property and casualty insurance, asset and wealth management, specialty finance, financial technology and services businesses.

North American Healthcare – This team focuses on investments in Physician Practice Management/Specialty clinics (including dental, ophthalmology, vet, dermatology and behavioral health), Healthcare IT, Specialty Pharmaceutical and Outsourced Pharmaceutical services.

Sustainability & Energy Transition – The SET team targets investments supporting and capitalizing on sustainability, decarbonization and the energy transition. Sub-sectors of focus include: sustainable fuels, commercial & industrial decarbonization solutions; waste-to-value and the circular economy; and enablement services. Transactions will take the form of growth equity and buyouts seeking lead, co-lead and significant minority investment positions.

Technology, Media & Telecommunications – This team focuses on investments in enterprise software and technology enabled services businesses, and other opportunistic technology, media and telecommunications situations.

The Equities department is comprised of: Private Capital Industry Groups, the Global Funds Team, the High Conviction Equities Team and the Portfolio Management Team. The department’s mission is to deliver growth through investments in both private and publicly traded entities.

What you’ll do

  • Conduct research to support the development of investment strategies and evaluate potential investment opportunities
  • Build financial models from the ground up that will be utilized for overall investment valuation, transaction structuring, and financing
  • Work with existing models developed by colleagues to incorporate new data and verify results
  • Coordinate third-party due diligence advisors and assist in the negotiation and execution of transactions
  • Work with management teams to implement initiatives and strategic decisions
  • Participate in the ongoing management and monitoring of portfolio companies, including the annual valuation process
  • Excel at preparation of investment recommendations and presentations to Private Capital’s investment committees

What you’ll need

  • A relevant undergraduate degree with excellent academic performance

Who you’ll work with

As a Talent Acquisition Coordinator, you will be part of a 3 person coordination team reporting to the Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition.  As part of your role, you will be responsible for supporting both regular and campus recruitment, coordinating  & planning all talent acquisition events, and primarily supporting the Talent and Senior Talent Acquisition Specialists with requests that come through our centralized talent acquisition inbox. We are currently located at 5650 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario. However, as a result of COVID-19, this is temporarily a remote role. In 2023, we will be moving to a new location in downtown Toronto!

What you’ll do

  • Support Talent/Sr. Talent Acquisition Specialists by providing exceptional service and seamless coordination with their talent acquisition requests.
  • Managing the talent acquisition inbox on assigned day(s) and assigning requests to other coordinators/taking on requests which could include: interview scheduling, case studies, greeting candidates (when we are back in the office) and providing timely updates to all stakeholders
  • Support TA/Sr. Talent Acquisition Specialists with sourcing and screening as required to support recruitment operations
  • Identifying and pipelining strong talent using passive sourcing techniques such as LinkedIn recruiter
  • Ensuring the Internal Career Opportunities email blast is sent each Monday in accordance with our Internal Posting Guidelines and Collective Agreement.
  • Prepare positions for postings (including LMIA positing requirements) and support various branding and social sourcing strategies
  • Support campus recruitment which includes: conducting intakes with hiring managers, screening resumes, scheduling interviews, extending and preparing offers.
  • Act as a brand ambassador for Ontario Teachers’ and plan, coordinate, and execute on various internal and external events such as:  information sessions, marquee global events, Take our Kids to Work day, and internal webinars and exclusive events for our students.
  • Liaise with key campus contacts to create partnerships and ensure that jobs are posted within the various school’s deadlines
  • Initiate background checks for all hires via Workday (HireRight) and acting as a primary contact to an assigned TA/Sr. TA Specialist(s) and escalating related issues to the Senior Manager as required
  • Provide general administrative support to the Talent Acquisition team including meeting minutes, invoice tracking and recruitment reporting including quarterly statistics to Stats Canada

What you’ll need

  • Minimum of 1 year of Talent Acquisition coordination experience
  • Post-secondary education, completion of or working towards CHRP as asset

Who you’ll work with

  • Relevant university degree with an Accounting, Finance or Investment concentration
