LANDFILL ATTENDANT BENEFITTED, PERMANENT FULL-TIME

TRAIL, BC The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is seeking applications for the permanent full-time position of landfill attendant, located in Trail, BC.

Reporting to the Landfill Supervisor, the Landfill Attendant is responsible for directing, educating and collecting payment from users at the McKelvey Creek Landfill in Trail, BC. Working as part of the dedicated team, the Attendant inspects customer loads, directs customer to required tipping locations and processes payment appropriately. Using their warm communication skills and work ethic, the Landfill Attendant is part of the Environmental Services team and enjoys working with the public.

Schedule:
This position has a fixed schedule and will be required to work with a running lunch:

Tuesday – Thursday
9:00 am – 5:15 pm

This is a benefitted position. All benefits are administered as per the Collective Agreement.

To be successful in this position, candidates must possess:

  • 1 year related job experience, ideally in a customer service or solid waste setting
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with safe work procedures
  • Cash handling skills
  • Effective customer service skills
  • Knowledge of recycling and general operations of landfills/materials preferred.

Job Description

The incumbent will perform skilled lifeguarding and instructional work. Work involves the provision of assistance to the Aquatics Programmer in implementing a community swimming and water safety program, and the Maintenance Supervisor in ensuring the
facility is maintained in a clean and safe state at all times. The job involves occasional handling of toxic chemicals, in pool chlorination and pH correction and janitorial work.
The incumbent must exercise courtesy, tact, diplomacy and some persuasion in dealing with the public as well as co-workers. Pursuant to the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Criminal Records Check Policy, this position has been deemed as a “Sensitive Position” by the RDKB. As such, candidates applying for this position are subject to a criminal record check.

SPECIFIC DUTIES: • Assists the Aquatic Programmer in presenting recreational swimming and water safety instructional programs.

• Observes pool activity, being constantly alert to the safety of all pool users and rescues persons experiencing difficulty in the water.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
• Considerable knowledge of all aspects of swimming techniques, swimming instruction, water safety and first aid.
• The ability to assist with the organization of a complex aquatics program.
• The ability to work as “part of a team.”
• The ability to exercise courtesy, tact, diplomacy and some persuasion in handling complaints and inquiries from the general public.
• Strong personal aquatic skills.
• Thorough knowledge of all Red Cross and Royal Life Saving Society standards and policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum 15 years of age
• Current National Lifeguard Service award
• Current CPR C qualification
