Position Information

This position will require occasional night rotations for ECMO support.

Rotation/Shifts

Days and evenings, including occasional nights, 8 hour shifts. Must be available for stand by and call back on evenings, nights, weekends, and stat holidays.

Basic Requirements

  • Successful completion of post-graduate program in Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology from an accredited institution;
  • Current certification with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP) and/ or the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP);
  • Non-certified candidates meeting equivalent educational requirements and ABCP certified candidates must have current approval of eligibility from the CSCP Board of Directors to challenge the National Examination; and this examination must be successfully completed within 1 year of hire;
  • Three years recent related experience in Cardiovascular Perfusion;
  • Good understanding of perfusion related mechanical and electrical technology;
  • Experience and ability to supervise/lead/coach/mentor;
  • Good understanding of computer applications and experience working with word processing, spreadsheet and database applications;
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in challenging work environment and stressful situations;
  • Ability to multi-task;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with pediatric Cardiovascular Perfusion;
  • Recent experience with a variety of mechanical circulatory support devices including intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventricular assist devices (VADs);
  • Experience working with variety of cardiac surgery procedures;
  • Experience in professional teaching and training;
  • Experience in medical research activities/ projects/ presentations;
  • Prior experience working as other health care professional in acute care setting;
  • Related graduate level of university education;
  • Proficiency in English and French – oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).

What you will do

Accountability #1: Communication and Community Relations Manager
The Communications-Community Relations Professional will oversee the Communications & Community Relations Plan of the Eye Institute, including implementation and maintenance of all internal and external communications, social media, marketing, fundraising, and grant writing within prescribed time frames, funding, and operational parameters;
The incumbent will play a vital role in advocacy and developing community partnerships as well as ensuring the profile of the Eye Institute is aligned with its Vision and Strategic Plan.

Accountability #2: Customer Relationship Management
Overseeing non-clinical operations of the uOttawa Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Ophthalmology – Association and Smyth Road Eye Research Physicians Partnership (SRERPP);
Providing leadership and direction to the Department Head and staff physicians;
Ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services to physicians;
Ensuring services are compliant with relevant legislation.

Accountability #3: Human Resources Management
Guiding and managing the overall delivery of HR services to the uOttawa Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Ophthalmology – Association, Smyth Road Eye Research Physicians Partnership (SRERPP), physicians’ staff and clinical/research fellowship trainees. The major areas directed are:
Physicians
Managing on behalf of new physician recruits, the application process for a university appointment;
Managing the uOttawa reappointment and faculty promotion processes;
Administering the membership requirements for the Department of Ophthalmology – Association and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation;
Managing the annual performance review process for physicians who are members of the SRERPP. Calculating clinical, academic and research “points” in the determination of physicians’ annual contributions to the department’s research fund.
Physicians’ Staff
Accountable for the effective and efficient utilization of human resources, adherence to TOH policies and procedures and compliance to legal requirements;
Annually, preparation of employment contracts for physicians’ staff and coordination of services with TOH – Paymaster and TOH – Human Resources;
Onboarding of new recruits;
Coaching and mentoring physicians’ staff;
Promoting and fostering a safe and healthy work environment;
Attendance management;
Clinical / Research Fellowship Trainees;
Onboarding of new recruits;
Annually, preparation of employment contracts and coordination of services with TOH – Paymaster and TOH – Human Resources.

Accountability #4: Management of non-clinical operating budgets.
Managing and reporting on the financial health of the uOttawa Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Ophthalmology – Association and Smyth Road Eye Research Physicians Partnership.
Planning, developing and administering operating budgets. Includes liaison with funding agencies;
Ensuring that the financial, performance and other information used for decision making is reliable and adequate.
Smyth Road Eye Research Physicians Partnership

Ensuring compliance to established research funding processes to ensure maximum benefits accrue to Medicine Professional Corporations;
Reviewing monthly results and paying consolidated expenses;
Compiling annual results (i.e. income all sources, physician contributions to teaching, research and administration) and applying the partnership’s salary cap framework to determine the physicians’ annual contributions to the partnership’s research fund. Calculating investment Tax Credits for physicians. Working with accountants for the review of financial information.
Department of Ophthalmology – Association
Managing the daily operations of the Association, preparing year-end file for the public accountants, investigating / responding to enquiries raised by the public accountants, payment of year-end profits to associates, reporting to funding authority;
TOHAMO AFP funding: responding to general queries and conducting the annual verification of the Association’s contributions to quality metrics (academic works, teaching workload and research initiatives). Quality metrics plus FTE count are used in determining the annual funding allocations to departments.
Faculty of Medicine – Annual operating funding

Invoicing and distribution of funds allocated to the Department of Ophthalmology: stipend pool, funding for medical secretaries, operating supplies, university contribution to the Maclaren Chair for Vision Research, and Junior Research Chair Program;
Invoicing for funds allocated by the Postgraduate Education Program to the department’s residency program: International Medical Graduates Allocation, Foreign Clinical Fellowship Allocation, Foreign Residents Allocation, Allocation from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU fund 20% of Base Transfer) and the Ministry of Health (Teaching and Research, or T & R fund 80% of Base Transfer).

Accountability #5: Representation of the department on the uOttawa Business Managers Finance Committee, Department of Ophthalmology Association – Governance Committee, TOHAMO – Business Managers Committee, Smyth Road Eye Research Physicians Partnership – Divisional meeting, Department of Ophthalmology – Executive Committee, uOttawa Department Teaching and Personnel Committee.
Participating as appropriate in working groups or committees;
Responsible for policy/practice and procedure development and documentation related to non-clinical activities.

Accountability #6: Other
Working in a manner that adheres to TOH practices, policies and procedures;
Assisting the Department Chair with the delivery/completion of mandates assigned by local, provincial and/or national committees/organizations;
Investigating / responding to adhoc requests (i.e. Annual Report on Research Expenditures – Statistics Canada, COVID-19 Vaccination of non-patient facing employees, accounting services provided to the Association of University Chairs in Ophthalmology on behalf of the Department Chair who was the Association’s Treasurer, Alternate Funding Plan – conversion from a Partnership to an Association, etc.)

What you will bring

Completion of a Post Graduate Business Degree or CMA accounting designation with three years practical experience;
Five plus years of progressive leadership experience in customer services and administration;
Broad knowledge and experience in the delivery of client services: accounting, human resources management, project management, development/application of corporate policies and procedures;
