Description:
The Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to lead scientific aspects of projects involving the development of nanomaterials for infectious disease detection, aptamer screening and biosensor development in the Kelley Laboratory (http://www.kelleylaboratory.com).
Qualifications:
Qualifications: Requires a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience. The incumbent must be familiar with and have a strong skillset in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and nanotechnology, and have experience with infectious disease detection, bacterial culture, in vitro selection/aptamers, preparation of biofunctionalized nanoparticles and analysis of the data. The candidate will also have an excellent publication record and be able to prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications/journals. Experience presenting findings at local, national and international conferences is required. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently, but also collaboratively with other members of the lab and individuals from partnering institutions. Experience overseeing a research group/providing direction to junior researchers is a strong asset.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work closely with the scientific team in the Kelley group to support the overall research goals of the lab. They will work with a highly interdisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, biochemists, biologists, and clinicians to achieve this goal. Key responsibilities of the RA include: developing efficient aptamer selection platforms, conducting aptamer selection, including hit validation and bioinformatic data analysis, developing biofunctionalized nanoparticles for sensing applications, liaison with our collaborators, training students, the formulation of new research directions, day to day project planning and scheduling.
Beyond these responsibilities, the individual may be expected to participate in the preparation of grant applications and research supervision of one or more students or other trainees. The candidate will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence and will design, direct, execute, analyze and present in written and oral forms novel investigative studies that build on and/or take advantage of the resources and expertise within the lab as well as candidate’s academic expertise.

Under the general direction of the Director, and working in collaboration with a wide range of offices both internal and external to the University, the Faculty Relations Consultant will provide a broad range of support in respect of faculty relations activities across the University of Toronto, with a primary focus on negotiations with the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA) and case management of grievances and workplace complaints involving faculty members and librarians. These include complaints regarding alleged incidents of bullying, harassment, discrimination, and sexual harassment and also complaints from students regarding their experience with graduate supervision.
The incumbent is familiar with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and all University of Toronto Workplace Policies (Human Resources Guideline on Civil Conduct, the Guideline for Employees on Concerns and Complaints Regarding Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment, the University of Toronto Workplace Violence Program, the Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment policy, etc.). The incumbent maintains an up-to-date awareness of provincial and federal law as it relates to the University as a workplace for staff, students, faculty, and librarians.
Key responsibilities include: advising on the interpretation and application of Faculty and Librarian agreements, policies and procedures; case management from a VPFAL perspective of workplace and student complaints involving faculty members and librarians; drafting summaries of complaints and letters; producing a variety of reports in support of Faculty Relations and bargaining with UTFA; providing support to University bargaining committees and the process of implementation of agreements.
The incumbent is required to use initiative, judgment and analytical skills in handling inquiries independently or referring them appropriately. As a representative of the Vice-President and Provost’s Office, they will be required to exercise a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness, and confidentiality regarding sensitive human resources issues.
Essential Qualifications:
(MINIMUM)
EDUCATION:
University degree in a relevant discipline and course work in the Human Resources field leading to the completion of the CHRP or MIR designation; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
IEXPERIENCE:
Minimum five (5) years’ related human resources experience with an emphasis on collective agreement and employment policy interpretation and application, preferably in an educational institution. Demonstrated experience with investigations and case management, preferably in a University environment. Experience in policy interpretation. Expert understanding of labour legislation and other employment law, including the Ontario Human Rights Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act. Experience working with diverse populations including demonstrated effective consultation skills with designated groups. Sound knowledge of human resources best practices and familiarity with public sector employment. Must have previous experience data management. Significant knowledge of HR principles and practices and, preferably, knowledge of the University’s policies and practices as they pertain to faculty.
SKILLS:
Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheet applications, database management, and scheduling software (e.g, Outlook). Internet research skills required.
