This competition is open to all applicants however internal candidates and applicants who were former employees of the University of Alberta in the past 18 months will be given priority consideration before external candidates. This position duration will be 11 months with an end date of September 30, 2022 with a possibility of extension. This position will be located at the University of Alberta Campus.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Lexuan Zhong, the Biomolecular Lab Technician will work alongside the team within the Built Environment Technology Lab (BETLab).

Duties

Record all data and results with accuracy
Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
Conduct quality control and quality assurance testing
Perform DNA/RNA extraction from various sample types
Perform real-time PCR and reverse transcription PCR on the extracted samples; PCR data analysis; UV adsorption of DNA/RNA
Perform virus/bacteria culture
Prepare SOP for testing of samples
Provide training for students
Identify and communicate results that require further investigation or discussion with Supervisor
Maintain a clean and orderly environment

Qualifications

High school diploma required; Post-secondary education is considered an asset
Strong understanding of molecular theory and best practices, including reverse transcription PCR, nucleic acid extraction, DNA/RNA UV adsorption. Primer and probe dilution calculation and preparation is an asset
Experience with standard molecular lab applications and instrumentation (e.g. DNA extraction, pipetting, PCR set up) is an asset
Familiarity with general bio-laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, incubators, pipettors, autoclaves, biological safety cabinets
Good working understanding of and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PPT
Time management and ability to prioritize
Good written and verbal communication skills
