Position Summary

We are seeking a 1-year research assistant to join a human dimensions research project examining the conservation of wetlands in agricultural settings in Alberta. The position will be based at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and will be supervised by Dr. Howard Harshaw (Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, & Recreation). The anticipated start date for the position is May, 2022. The program of research integrates several fields of research, including outdoor recreation, environmental sociology, and wildlife management using a human dimensions[1] approach.

Wetland conservation faces two critical challenges: (1) lack of information about agricultural landowner preferences for/attitudes about wetland conservation practices and policies; and (2) limited understanding of agricultural landowners’ engagement in wetland conservation practices and the outcomes of these practices. Understanding agricultural producers’ motivations to make wetland management decisions that support biodiversity and wetlands conservation is critical. Statements by industry associations suggest broad understanding of the relationships between conservation and agricultural land management, yet this understanding does not appear to influence individual land management decisions. We seek to understand why that is.

The research assistant will work closely with Dr. Harshaw to conduct a systematic review of agricultural landowners’ social-psychological characteristics and their preferences. Adopting a standardized approach to reviewing the literature will ensure that the findings are replicable, unbiased and provide a thorough synthesis of the available evidence. This approach follows explicit, systematic methods that are selected with a view to minimizing bias to provide reliable findings and conclusions. Subject areas will include:

Landowner attitudes about practices to support sustainable wetlands and conserve ecological services.
Behavioural influences of landowners’ engagement in sustainable wetland management practices, including actual and perceived determinants and barriers.
Best practices that promote nature-based climate solutions.
Duties:

The research assistant will:

Identify, review, and synthesize relevant literatures following established review protocols.
Lead the reporting of the systematic review.
Lead, or co-author a manuscript to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
If time and interest allows, the research assistant can participate in a series of focus groups that will be held with agricultural producers and land managers in Alberta.

This 1-year position is funded by Wildlife Habitat Canada, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and the Canadian Wetlands Roundtable.

The pay rate is $19.69/hr plus 4% vacation pay.

The position is full-time (40hr/week) between May and the end of August 2022; between September 2022 and the end of March 2023, the position will be part-time (approximately 15 hr/week).

Qualifications:

The candidates must hold an undergraduate degree, and have a strong background in sociology, environmental psychology, agricultural systems, or human dimensions.
A Master’s degree is considered an asset.
Prior expertise with systematic reviews, and (co-) authored publications will be advantageous.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
To Apply:
Applicants should send a cover letter, CV, and short statement (1-2 pages) of research interest to Dr. Harshaw ([email protected]). Initial review of applications will begin on April 21, 2022.
