Job Description

The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Coordinator Wabanaki Language Revival with the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre. This is a one-year term full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with a salary range of $47,167 – $61,316 per annum.

The Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre (MWC), located on traditional territory of Wolastoqiyik at the University of New Brunswick’s Fredericton campus, provides a learning environment for Indigenous students to develop a strong cultural foundation as well as academic and professional skills.

Reporting to the Director of the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre, the role of Coordinator of Wabanaki Language Revival is to coordinate and implement numerous critical language revitalization efforts, including but not limited to: language nests, language camps for students and communities, and an East Coast language gathering to be created, organized and implemented by the Coordinator, in conjunction with Elders, language keepers and an established Language Committee.

Position summary:

  • Responsible for coordinating meetings and materials and supporting the directive for the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey Language Strategy identified by the MWC Language Committee.
  • Establish an MWC database for all language development services, apps, courses, programs, publications and other resources pertaining to good practices in language renewal.
  • Continue the development of language apps serving both Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey language learners.
  • Create, organize and facilitate the second annual East Coast Language Gathering for April 2020, creating opportunities for UNB students to present research, publications, and presentations about language revival strategies, planning, and policy best practices for language revival. The gathering will provide opportunities for students to be an integral part of ongoing decolonization and building good relations at the university.
  • Explore the Council of Canada Summer Immersion programs to ensure TRC Calls to Action provide transference of grants, bursaries and scholarships to Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey students.
  • Develop language modules for the Wabanaki Collection; a resource portal online, housed and hosted by MWC.
  • Responsible for the creation of bilingual language programs: a bilingual language teaching certificate is in the process of being created. The certificate will consist of courses available for all UNB students, faculty and instructors.
  • Responsible for a language and identity literature review and annotated bibliography.

Requirements/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred. 1-3 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of Wabanaki language systems, ceremonies and traditions.
  • Knowledge in the areas of indigenous language, linguistics, critical theory, history, and indigenous studies.
  • Ability to negotiate various worldviews and knowledge systems well.
  • Proficiency in digital literacy programs and computer applications.
  • Experience using large databases.

This is a continuing full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the SALAC employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range of $22.02 – $26.05 per hour.

The Clerk PL5 (Client Support Officer) provides superior customer service in support of academic and administrative units on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. This position reports to the Associate Registrar, Student Information Systems & Services and is responsible for all academic scheduling, reporting, and the support of administrative & student information systems.

Position summary:

  • Produce the undergraduate and graduate academic timetables. Provide reports to departmental timetable coordinators. Collect, compile, enter, and ensure that timetable information is accurate and timely in the system.
  • Use scheduling optimization software to assign rooms to all timetabled courses.
  • Ensure that appropriate classroom resources are assigned and space utilization is maximized.
  • Manage daily requests for all academic room bookings.
  • Produce the fall and winter term examination schedules. Assign space for scheduled exams and ensure public exam schedule is accurate. Maintain inventory and distribution of examination supplies.
  • Resolve complex issues throughout the timetabling and scheduling processes, adhering to policy and university regulations.
  • Provide internal and external enrollment reporting and statistics, including ad hoc requests for student system data and reporting.
  • Update and maintain Senate Curriculum Committee approved changes for academic programs, new courses, course deletions, course numbers, title changes, credit hours, and prerequisites/co-requisites.
  • Provide support for all Registrar’s Office graduation processes.
  • Review, evaluate, and determine academic decisions for Dean’s list, Good Standing, Co-op/PEP, Entrance Programs and Bridging Year.
  • Provides high level support and training for faculty/staff on student information system, Colleague Self-Service, Perceptive Content & SharePoint. Troubleshoots academic issues for class waitlists. Advise, GPA calculations and Academic decisions.
  • Maintain the Registrar’s Office external site and SharePoint site.
  • Provide back up for the Manager to evaluate and authorize requests for electronic access to confidential academic and student record information for faculty/staff under UNB privacy guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements/Skills:

  • University degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • 5 years’ experience in a university setting with administrative responsibility and experience in a service-centered environment.
  • Direct experience with scheduling software, reporting tools, and database systems. Superior knowledge of Ellucian Colleague is considered an asset.
  • Attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The successful candidate will teach introductory-level European history; HIST 2101 and 2102 (Europe & the World before 1800/after 1800); and upper- level courses. Preference given to candidates with expertise in the Early Modern period. Applicants able to teach in both the European and British fields are welcome. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in History and undergraduate teaching experience. Candidates with a PhD nearing completion will be considered for appointment as Lecturer. The successful candidate will be expected to be engaged in a program of research, scholarly, or creative activity within their area of expertise for the duration of this term appointment.

The Instructional Technology Specialist is the primary point of contact with users for day-to-day IT activities and acts as a centralized resource to provide technology consulting, installation, support, and maintenance.

Position summary:

Share administrator oversight and responsibility for both the LMS and various web-conferencing services, working in partnership with other UNB departments to maintain, manage, configure and support each system.
Help develop policies and configure systems to meet the shared needs of both CEL and UNB.
Provide staff, students and instructors with hands-on training and technical support in the use of each system.
Create clear and effective training materials to support each service.
Provide the content of textual and graphical updates to the web support team to maintain UNB’s official support pages for each service.
Manage CEL ticketing systems. Escalate complex issues to the appropriate parties.
Provide technical and troubleshooting assistance related to computer hardware and software, mobile devices, printers, and other tech tools and products.
Run and monitor software performance testes and execute functional tests.
Provide IT systems orientation to new staff members.

Requirements/Skills:

Undergraduate degree or college diploma in a relevant field.
Equivalent mix of education and experience will be considered.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an IT support role proving support for end-users in a fast-paced, business environment.
Experience troubleshooting Windows, MacIntosh and Linux operating systems.
Experience working with learning management systems or equivalent experience.
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Ability to adapt to and learn new technologies independently.
Must be able to work with an adjusted work schedule, occasional overtime, or participate in after-hour service calls.
