Job Description

The Shelter Support Worker has an important role in providing shelter services at a time when clients are most in need. Working collaboratively and with a flexible approach, you will register, orient, support and advocate for clients who are vulnerably housed or experiencing homelessness. You will also interact with other service agencies and professionals in support of the client’s needs, and assist in the running of the shelter by participating in cooking and some light cleaning.

To succeed, you will have a solid understanding of the issues faced by homeless or vulnerably housed people. You will also have a sound understanding of the support needs of people with low incomes. Qualifications

  • Diploma in a related Human or Social Services field.
  • At least one (1) year experience working in a related environment or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Preferable experience in the community social services sector with working knowledge of community support agencies and resources.

Requirements

  • Current Food Safe Level 1.
  • Emergency First Aid with CPR Level C.
  • Complete the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Record Check.

Job Information

  • Hourly Wage Rate $26.23 – $27.91.
  • Please note: Base wage is $24.23 – $26.91. The hourly wage rate includes the following premiums:
    • ON Premium:  An additional $2.00 for all regular time shifts that cross midnight.
  • Work Location 809 Burdett ST – Sandy Merriman House.
  • Work Days Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
  • Shift Time 7:00pm to 7:00am.
  • Total Weekly Hours 36.
  • Union BCGEU.

Job Description

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to coordinate assessments and plan, develop, implement, support, and evaluate client goal-oriented service plans by providing case management services to assigned program clients.

Some of the job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Implementing psychosocial rehabilitation/treatment programs with individuals, families and groups as indicated in their personal service plans. This includes services such as leisure, nutritional, educational, vocational, and financial planning/formulating rehabilitation, and treatment programs in collaboration with the client, their family, and other multi-disciplinary team members.
  • Utilizing consensual decision-making, guidance, counseling, and negotiation skills.
  • Utilizing resources to maximize productivity and to ensure the consistent delivery of professional services crucial to client’s care and rehabilitation.
  • Assisting the Manager or designate by supporting and guiding Victoria Cool Aid workers with care and rehabilitation plans and issues.
  • Maintaining comprehensive records by documenting data, assessments, treatment, and progress in the client’s medical records according to VCAS policies and procedures.
  • Recording service data, work records and other statistics as required.
  • Participating in and promoting team functioning and supporting team leadership.
  • Assist in the Investigation of complaints/concerns expressed by service partners, the public, and families and takes appropriate action.

Qualifications

  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practising LPN registrant.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) model; assessment and treatment and case management methodologies; learning theories of mental disorder and intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of relevant mental health and addictions legislation including legal statutory boundaries governing consumer rights. Knowledge of community mental health and addictions programs, services, resources, and promotion. Knowledge of other health disciplines (including primary care physicians) and their role in client care.
  • One (1) year of related experience working with clients with a variety of acute and chronic illnesses/diseases including:
  • Brain Injury
  • Substance Use
  • Mental Health

Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to use the nursing process in mental health treatment programs i.e., assess (physical, mental/physiological/functional, and environmental), plan, implement, make decisions, organize, prioritize, evaluate, and communicate as required.

  • Demonstrated ability to practice initiative, good interpersonal, crisis intervention, leadership, and teaching skills.
